Windows WhoIS and WhosIP Command Line Search,  Domain Search and IP Search From Windows Command Prompt

System Administrator day to day activities includes renewal of domains, buying of new domain and more over checking and validating of the existing purchased domains. If any one loss their favorite domain or the organization loss their domain .. What will happens!!

It is necessary for us to check the validity and renew the domains before its expiration date. There are so many tools available to search “Whois” and find out the domain status.

“Whois” domain search have major role in domain industry as well as support peoples. If a customer, reports an email problem etc. to support,  the support person first checks the validity and expire date of the customer domain. This is done with the help of “Whois” search.

“Whois” command is available with Linux terminals, but how can we search “whois” from Windows?

Step To Configure Whois Domain Name Search In Windows

  1. Download WhoisCL software from the link.
  2. Extract the downloaded file (Requires Uncompressing software).
  3. Copy the whoiscl.exe and Paste it inside operating system32 directory “C:\WINDOWS\system32”.
  4. Open Command Prompt, Go to Windows Start -> Run -> Type cmd
  5. Run the command in the Command window.
WhoisCL [-r] Domain

Examples:
WhoisCL microsoft.com
WhoisCL -r google.com
WhoisCL w3c.org

This will give us the domain details.

  1. Download WhosIP software from the link.
  2. Extract the downloaded file (Requires Uncompressing software).
  3. Copy the whosip.exe and Paste it inside operating system32 directory “C:\WINDOWS\system32”.
  4. Open Command Prompt, Go to Windows Start -> Run -> Type cmd
  5. Run the command in the Command window.
WhosIP [-r] host-name

Examples:
WhosIP -r www.yahoo.com
WhosIP www.google.com
WhosIP 216.239.59.147

This will give us the IP details.

How To Repair and recover Microsoft Outlook .PST File Using ScanPst.exe

Microsoft Outlook uses .pst files to store the user account information. It also stores different contents like emails, tasks, calendar, email contact etc.

In some conditions, improper shutdown of Outlook, bigger .pst file size etc.  cause the damages to .pst files and thus loss of data. To recover the .pst file and bring it back to live we use a tool called scanpst.exe.

The name indicates scanpst.exe scanns the local MS Outlook .pst file and repair the damaged files.

Steps to Scan and repair Microsoft Outlook .pst File

  1. Locate scanpst.exe executer, by default this .exe is located inside the URL path “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12” or “C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\LocaleID”.
  2. Go to control panel -> Mail -> and find out the local Data file .pst location.
  3. Double click on scanpst.exe and show the location of your Outlook .pst file.
  4. Click on Start button to scanning the .pst file. The scanner will repair and rectify the damage of the .pst file.

Transferring Recovered PST File Data to New PST File

Once the repair finishes, Outlook creates a “Recovered” version of your .pst file, and you need to tell Outlook to use it rather than the old, damaged or corrupted .pst file.Next, you’ll need to point Outlook in the right direction, namely at the recovered .PST file: Start Outlook Normally Special Note: If Scanpst.exe wasn’t able to repair the .pst data file, you may need a stronger repair tool. Try scanning it with the Stellar Phoenix PST repair utility. Select Go from the top menu, choose Folder List:

With the Folder List open, you should see a Recovered Personal Folders folder with the usual Outlook Personal Folders, or a Lost and Found option.If the Lost and Found folder has a file that the Inbox Repair Tool successfully fixed, it will show up here. If it’s empty, the Repair Tool was unsuccessful.If you do see a fixed .pst file in the Lost and Found box, you’ll need to create a new .pst file to move the repaired file(s) to. After you’ve simply dragged the files over from the “Recovered” .pst file to the newly created .pst file , you can turf the Recovered Personal Folders contents.

Steps to Repair and Fix MS Outlook .ost File Using OST Integrity Checker (Scanost.exe)

Sometimes our MS Outlook runs into error. It cannot display all our data or even function correctly. The OST Integrity Check in one of the repair tool available with Microsoft Office installation, which helps us to check and repair .OST Oulook file.

If you see synchronize issue in MS Outlook account and sync folder in the outlook shows errors, we can run OST Integrity Checker Tool and repair .ost file.

Things to be noted:

  • MS Outlook mail account should be connected with your Microsoft Exchange. If you work offline the tool cannot check your ost file and sync with respect to your Exchange mailbox. To complete the action we need to change the Outlook Work Offline mode to Online.
  • OST Integrity Checker will not make changes to your running MS Exchange mailbox.
  • The tool scans both your .ost file and your mailbox on the server running Exchange, compares the items and folders in each, and attempts to reconcile synchronization differences between them.

Steps to Repair MS Outlook .ost File

  2. Open your Outlook MS Exchange account.
  3. Double click on scanost.exe and Start the scanning process. The tool syncs your local .ost content with respect to exchange mailbox.
  4. To fully repair the .ost file, we can rescan the same .ost file with scanpst.exe. This tool helps us to repair any errors in our local .ost file.

VMware vSphere Client does not open on any Windows operating systems with the error: parsing the server “” “clients.xml” file

vSphere client is well know utility to mange and administrate VMware infrastructures. This software is available with ESX, ESXi (paid version), and vCenter Server downloads. Users with appropriate permission can login into VMware environment using vSphere client.

Soon after the latest Windows .Net update, access to VMware infrastructure using vSphere client result in a “error: parsing the server “<servername>” “clients.xml” file”. This error is known to VMware Company and they have already released the patch.

Follow the instructions to solve the error: “parsing the server “<servername>” “clients.xml” file

The type initializer for VirtualInfrastructure.Utils.HttpWebRequestProxy’ threw an exception.”

You cannot use vSphere Clients prior to the Update 1 release, to access the vCenter Server or ESX hosts because of a Microsoft update that targets the .NET Framework (980773), released on June 9th 2010.

Perform one of these two options to correct the issue:

1. Download and install the latest version of the vSphere Client.

a.  To download and install the vSphere Client for ESX, ESXi (paid version), and vCenter Server:

  • Go the downloads site.
    Note: The vSphere Client .exe is part of the ESX, ESXi, or vCenter Server download binaries.
  • Click Download next to your ESX, ESXi, or vCenter Server edition.
  • Log in with your VMware Account credentials.
  • Click Yes to agree to the EULA.
  • Click the .exe link next to vSphere Client and Host Update Utility.
    Note: You do not need to download the entire vSphere suite, only the vSphere Client.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the updated vSphere Client.

b. To download and install the vSphere Client for ESXi (free version):

  • Go to the ESXi download site.
  • Click Download.
  • Log in with your account credentials, or register for free.
  • Click Download next to vSphere Client and Host Update Utility.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the updated vSphere Client.

2. Remove the MS update from your Windows operating system. The vSphere Client works after the update is removed.

Note: This affects Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

If the build number for your vSphere Client is 208111 or higher, then you have vSphere Client Update 1 or later, and should not be affected by this issue.

To determine your build number:

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
  2. Click Help > About. There first entry is shows the build number of the vSphere Client.OR

You can determine the version of vSphere Client by reviewing the build number located in the first line of a viclient.log file, located in %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\VMware\vpx on the system running the vSphere Client. Build 208111 or higher indicates you are using vSphere Client 4.0 Update 1 or later.

For example:

Skype is one of the most powerful chatting software used commonly. The software’s appearance and its options attract users. We experience good voice and video clarity through Skype chatting.

Most of the users have multiple Skype ids. If we look into a family or business there might have multiple Skype accounts.  It common practice to have multiple Skype account for various purposes e.g.: Business, Personal etc..  No one would like to mix their personal pressure with Business or so on. In such cases Multiple Skype accounts will come in role.

I would like to explain, how we can configure multiple Skype account in the same desktop?

Steps to Configure Multiple Skype Account in Same Desktop

If you have already done with first two steps, go directly to 3rd step.

  • Download and install Skype Chatting software.
  • Create Multiple Skype accounts.
  • Locate the Skype installation location (Default Skype installation location is “C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone”).
  • Go to “C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone” -> Right click Skype.exe and create shortcut.
  •  Rename the new Skype shortcut. Right now we have multiple Skype icons in our desktop.
  • Right click the shortcut and select Properties.
  • Change the Target path to “C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe” /secondary

  •  Click Apply and then Click on OK.
  • Double click on each individual Skype icons and enter your multiple Skype accounts.

  •  We are now configured Multiple Skype account in single desktop. The Multiple Skype logins are found in the system Tray.
